University life has its own charm

We see many people often saying “University life has its own charm”. This line is precise yet profound. The main official reason for us to join university is studies. But youngsters like me are well aware of the luscious desires we carry in our minds before taking admissions. To study is the last thing we’ve in minds.

Now let me get straight to the point. The charm of university life of course. The day we join our university we’re greeted by weather beaten faces in the form of seniors. Their experiences and advices are intimidating but fun at the same time. The gossips we share about teachers we hate have truly no match.

Let’s talk about some of university’s hot spots. Students become aware of spot like pg (prem gali), Qasim kay Samosay and Jabbar ki chaat before they smell the old books of seminar and main library.

Subsidiary subjects are sure problematic for students as they have to cover long distances and travel from one department to the next. But to tell you the truth, this factor has one hidden charm. While covering these distances you get a lot of time to chat and gossip as department grants you a considerable amount of time in between the periods. Thought the scorching heat of sun burns us badly, we happily tolerate it. It’s a price that we’ve to pay for out ‘Chit-chat luxury’

and, not forgetting the celebrations we’ve in our departments every month. ‘Cheap day’, ‘black day’, Picnic day, Eid Milan party, farewell functions and many such occasions are celebrated with great vigor. The best part I find in my department is that teachers are extremely cooperative and don’t create hurdles in playful schemes of students. They’re participators as well as attendees.

Escapism is the feeling that we all want to have. Though we all love being home with parents and siblings, we still need an outlet to vent out our frustrations against many issues. And we all know, friends are most convenient way of forgetting our never-ending troubles. While in university, we’re bombarded with a great deal of issues and discussions that we see, listen and solve. This busy schedule reminds us of the goal we need to focus our attentions upon and helps us disregard the petty issues that bother us on daily basis.

University life has numerous charms in it. When I try to recall some, a host of instances bombard my senses. But the limited examination time span doesn’t allow me to discuss all in detail. So I’ll stop here and spare you J

The Beginning...

By Syeda Nadia Zarif
Today I am writing my 8th blog and after thinking about so many topics I decided to write about my whole experience of being engaged with this assignment. Almost two months back when our teacher assigned us this task of writing, I didn’t have any idea of what is BLOG all about!!!!
At that time I thought that I won’t be able to write even a single article as to the whole of my life I never bother to write so it was seriously a matter to think for me. There were days of frustration, I used to spend whole days in just thinking about how could I be able to write one article every week. But when I looked around I found many of my class mates as worried as I was as they were also not so perfect in writing but still they were managing to write.
Then I realized that it’s all about COMMITMENT. One can do anything if he or she is committed to it. So I also made a commitment to myself that I would definitely write whatever be the circumstances or will it be worth reading or not. Not only because I want to get good marks but also because I don’t want my group to suffer just because of me.
And now after writing 7 articles on different topics I can feel the improvement in my writing, although I know that I am not a good writer, I don’t have such writing skills as many of my fellows have but still I have an inner satisfaction that the commitment that I made to myself is fulfilled.
Here I can’t forget my BLOG MEMBERS who encouraged me for my sub-standard writings and made me realize that THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING AND BEGINNING CAN’T BE PERFECT. So thank u all for your support. Here not to forget my ADMINISTRATOR as well, who from the day 1st was very hopeful for our blog, she kept encouraging us even after so many controversies and labels of cheaters, butterers, losers and many more. So good work administrator!!!!
In the end I just want to say that this assignment has proved to the most beneficial assignment for me in the span of 2 years. I have learnt so many things from this assignment it made me observe things so closely, to think about them and finally and most importantly to write about them.

Pedestrian Bridge: facility or torture…

By Sehar Azhar Dar

University of Karachi is situated at a very busy road where we can see a huge traffic every time we pass by. And because of this many people especially KUrians face problems crossing the road.

Usually we see that over these busy roads government usually constructs crossing bridges for pedestrians. We have a pedestrian bridge too in front of the varsity near the Silver Jubilee gate.

Despite having this bridge to provide us a safe pathway, some students still think that crossing the road was a better option since they find it quite difficult to climb up the stairs. They say that there is already a long walk up to their department which causes fatigue and this bridge makes it more agonizing.

I think when we have a safer path we OUGHT to use it and should not take any risks. It’s really up to us to decide either this bridge is a facility or a torture.

Tips for adjustment in University. .

By Sameen Meher.
For many first-year students, the University is not a well known place. This is another unusual experience of their academic session, as they had before like school and college. But here the only difference is that, it is a time when they are not supported by their parents or other elders. Parents assume as their child become grownup so there is no need of counseling anymore but reality is somehow different than it. It is a definite break from past life. The individual's usual sources of support are no longer present to facilitate adjustment to the unfamiliar environment.
Therefore students of psychology department have proposed a study regarding following problem discussed above and concluded some tips for students which may provide realistic expectations concerning social life on university.

· If they allow sufficient time, students usually find peers in the university to provide structure and a valuable support system in the new environment. The important thing for the student to remember in meeting new people is to be oneself.
· Meaningful, new relationships should not be expected to develop overnight. It took a great deal of time to develop intimacy in university.
· Increased personal freedom can feel both wonderful and frightening. Students can come and go as they choose with no one to "hassle" them. At the same time, things are no longer predictable. The strange environment with new kinds of procedures and new people can create the sense of being on an emotional. This is normal and to be expected.
· Working with classmates can present special, sometimes intense, problems. Negotiating respect of personal opinion can be a complex task. The complexity increases when classmates are of different ethnic/cultural backgrounds. Communicating one's legitimate needs calmly, listening with respect to a classmate's concerns, and being willing to compromise to meet each other can promote resolution of issues.
· It is unrealistic to expect that all classmates will have same suggestions regarding to a single project. Personal biases are always there.
· University syllabus is a great deal more difficult than other academic sections. There are more reading assignments, and the exams and papers cover a greater amount of material. Instructors expect students to do more work outside the classroom. In order to survive, the student must take responsibility for his or her actions. This means the student needs to follow the course outlines and keep us with the readings. The student must do the initiating. If a class is missed, it is up to the student to borrow lecture notes from someone who was present. If the student is having difficulty with course work, he or she needs to ask for help--ask to do extra work.
Among the most common concerns student faced are: low self-confidence; finding, enhancing, or ending a relationship; getting along with others; puzzling or distressing emotional states; family problems; self-defeating behaviors; controlling use of drugs (cigrates); life purpose and direction; and career decision-making.
· First of all students have to suffer with a lonely period. In which they think everyone around them are self-confident and socially successful. There may be concerns about forming friendships.

It went well...

By Summya Khan

This is it... this is the end of my assignment. Nothing much is left about our university which we have not discussed therefore i prefer writing the end words in this post.

This is almost the end of this semester, of our assignments, classes, happiness and joy. everyone is busy nowadays getting their photo copied notes and striving to get a full attendance...during the last week. yes, this will be the time after which we will be tormented with short attendance lists. Lets see who will be lucky enough to make it there. Good luck folks.

Sahafionline has been a great experience. I got to write stuff i never thought i would ever write about. All in all it has been an interesting blog and i would like to continue with it. I learnt team work and experienced some rough times as well. I am glad at least the "assignment" part has been completed.

Our administrator was a good support who got scolded at times on our behalf. I hope we do not dissappoint her or our teacher. Well, here I end my post and wish to write more in future. Bye! for now....

Students' week. .

By Syeda Nadia Zareef.

Celebrating STUDENT’S WEEK is a must activity in every educational institution be it school, college or university because after having so many hardships (in terms of studies) during the whole year students need some relaxation in the end which works as a HAJMOLA to digest all the theories, concepts, views, perceptions and so on.

Then how come KARACHI UNIVERSITY remain behind especially when it’s a matter of entertainment, so every year by the late OCTOBER, it is celebrated deliberately and passionately (yes in this particular week every student is so deliberate and passionate to enjoy). Although for majority of students every week is student’s week with full-on HALLA GULLA & MASTI but still it is something ,for which everyone waits because it gives you license of doing every odd thing ,and to enjoy every bit of your student life.
Now let’s talk about how it is celebrated, every department celebrates it in its own way. Mostly science departments celebrates COLORS DAYS, whole week students dress-up according to the color of the day, while arts department goes with the THEMES like cheap day, fancy dressing day, cultural day etc. some celebrates WEDDING WEEK as well. MELAS and SEMINARS are also organized by some departments, while different sorts of games and competitions are also set up in every department.

Student’s organizations like JAMIAT and APMSO also actively participate in the occasion (as always) Jamiat organize BAZM-E-ADAB where JO RAKHTEY HAIN SHAIRANA ZAUQ, KARTEY HAIN POORA APNA SHAUQ!!!!!!!!! Wow! I can also do poetry!!! . The last day is very happening in which Jamiat organize NEELAAM GHAR (same that used to broadcast on PTV but not with that much impressive host) where students get a good chance of winning so many impressive items from books to bikes and gold rings and earrings as well (Hmmm! that’s not bad).

Then the most happening and enjoyable part of the whole student’s week is a MELA organized by APMSO on the last day. Students from other universities also visit on that particular day just to enjoy that mela, here you find Food Stalls with delicious food items, then so many Games and Competitions are also set up with gifts to the winning ones. Surprisingly, a PALMIST is also found out there. Those who have a belief in palmistry fulfill their wish to know the future (although, it’s more of a fun than palmistry). All in all it’s great fun to be there on the last day with friends and to pass quality time with them.

So, on the whole, students week gives so much colors and joys to the university and works as the energizer for the students so that they could prepare for the terminals with a fresher mind.

So it ends. . .

By Kanwal Naz
Eight posts and almost two months, this journey has been quite interesting for me. We were assigned this blog to get twenty marks and get the basic ideas of online journalism but it taught something else too along the way.

People fought, people criticised, got dramatic, sarcastic, indifferent, impossible, hilarious and foolish. instead of writing blogs we got some serious entertainment at times of which our blog was a proud participant. well, it is a bit sad that we wont be able to get all of that in our lives again. it will be a part of my memories forever.

For a person like me who was not much into writing, it really helped me. not only did i get to write my own stuff and get it published but also i got to read material coming out from my class fellows. some of them work on other blogs but still, they are a pleasure to read and inspire me alot.

My blog fellows were a real team. 'ALMOST' all of us worked really hard not only to get marks but to prove our blog's worth. we were criticised sometimes looked down upon and misunderstood but i guess it will pay off in the long run.

Finally thanks to the readers and especially our Administrator who was very cooperative. there have been too many "HATS OFF" therefore i will just appreciate you by saying "keep on writing Ms Adiministrator, YOU rock!"

Will really miss being here... Ciao!
